Gandhi is a sweeping historical epic that tells the life story of its titular historical figure, Mahatma Gandhi, as played by the veteran British actor Sir Ben Kingsley. According to Guinness World Records, in one of the final moments of the film that depicts Gandhi's funeral, Attenborough ensured that the scene would be filmed on the 33rd anniversary of Gandhi’s assassination and assembled just under 95,000 contract performers. However, Columbia Pictures Productions made announcements about the filming and were able to summon an additional 200,000 volunteer performers. Eleven camera crews were utilized, and over 20,000 feet of footage was captured...

Before it premiered in theaters in Japan, nobody really knew anything about Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron beyond the fact that it was likely the animation icon’s final motion picture. This was a production that was going to be getting by on word-of-mouth and the appeal of seeing a new Miyazaki title on the big screen. No other major marketing maneuvers would be needed....

Rotten Tomatoes is forming Three New Partnerships to Support LGBTQ, Asian Pacific Islander and Black Entertainment Critics. The review platform has linked up with GALECA, Gold House and the National Association of Black Journalists as its donations to diversify the field surpass the $600,000 mark. In the five years since Rotten Tomatoes launched its Critics Outreach and Grant Program, the platform has given more than $600,000 to diversify the field of entertainment criticism, including $500,000 to media inclusion scholarships and other initiatives and $100,000 for networking events. In addition, among the 1,000-plus critics it has added to its famous Tomatometer, half are women and 24 percent are people of color. In all, 66 percent of the new Tomatometer-approved critics hail from a historically excluded background in part as a result of allowing freelance critics (61 percent of new adds) and those from newer outlets (13 percent)....

Director Werner Herzog and cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger are scheduled to accept a special award for a cinematographer-director duo at the 31st edition of the EnergaCamerimage cinematography festival in November in Toruń, Poland. In nearly 30 years of collaboration, the pair have created documentaries and six features. Alongside their first joint venture, Death for Five Voices (1995), their documentaries include Little Dieter Needs to Fly (1997), My Best Fiend (1999), Wheel of Time (2003), Grizzly Man (2005), Encounters at the End of the World (2007), Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010), Into the Abyss (2011), From One Second to the Next (2013), Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World (2016), Into the Inferno (2016), Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds (2020) and Theatre of Thought (2022)....

In a lawsuit filed Aug. 14, former NFL star and Blind Side subject Michael Oher said he was cheated out of profits for the film by the family at its center. But Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy have said they split profits from the movie with Oher and accused him of a $15 million “shakedown.” Now Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-heads of Alcon, are defending their Oscar hit, released in 2009, calling the accusations that the film’s true story was fabricated “mischaracterizations and uninformed opinions.” They also released an accounting of payments made in relation to the life rights to the project. (The deal was initially made at Fox, but Alcon inherited it when the company acquired the film.)..

In a major change to the November box office calendar, Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated Dune: Part Two has been pushed to next year amid the ongoing actors strike, which prevents stars from promoting their projects. Legendary and Warner Bros.’ big-budget sequel was slated to open Nov. 3 in North America timed to its global rollout, but will instead debut domestically on March 15, 2024. In a twinned move, Legendary and Warners pushed back Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire one month to April 12, 2024 (it previously was set to open on Dune‘s new March 15 date)...
